THE HISTORY
The MODERN
GROUP was set up by Mr. Suleman Haji Omer, the chairman in 1950. Mr. Suleman began his
business career in 1940 by putting up a wholesale cloth business under the name of
"HAJI OMER & SONS" alongwith his three brothers Mr. Tahir Haji Omer, Mr.
Ayoob Haji Omer and Mr. Karim Haji Omer. In 1952 another cloth store was put up by the
name of "AYOOB BROTHERS". By the mid 1950's Mr. Suleman began picking up the
basics of the export trade and set up "MODERN TEXTILE MILLS", alongwith his
cousin Mr. Younus Ibrahim. Development and changes on many fronts followed especially
during the late sixties, seventies and eighties:
Considerable exports increased in yarn and cloth.
Mr. Suleman's two elder sons joined the family business. Mr. Mohammed
Qasim after getting a business degree from Canada joined in 1969 and Mr. Yousuf Suleman
joined in 1979 after getting a textile engineering degree from the U.S.A.
A modern office was set up as the company headquarters in the hub of
Karachi business world in I.I. Chundrigar Road.
More shuttle looms were added to make a total of 400 looms.
A new Spinning Mill was set up in mid-seventies making a total of 26,000
spindles.
An Open-end mill was set up in the mid-eighties with 640 rotors.
An Air-jet weaving mill was set up in 1987 with 24 Picanol looms
(Belgium) with warping from Beninger (Switzerland) and sizing from Sucker (Germany).
The younger lot entered the business in the 1980s. Mr. Shaukat Ali in
1980 after acquiring a degree in textiles, Mr. Hanif Ayoob in 1985 and Mr. Asif Karim in
1988 after graduating from the U.S.A. in Management Information Systems.
In 1989 it was decided to venture into the burgeoning garment industry
of Pakistan. A garment division was set up under the name of "MODSTITCH".
Production started in the last quarter of 1989.
In the 1989 a new Air-jet weaving plant was installed with 58 looms from
Picanol (Belgium) under the name of "AL-JADEED TEXTILE MILLS LTD".
